Gardening Part 3 – The Fruits of my Loom…
I think that’s actually supposed to be ‘fruits of my labors’ but whatever… So I’ve been gardening for a few days now and it’s OK – not as fun as huge Oni fights and Helephants, but it’s a cute diversion, and I DO find myself checking on my little plants a few times a day just to make sure they’re happy..
So I’ve got my first little garden, my Boom Shroom, Despairagus, and Dandilion, and I planted a second patch of three Pink Dandilions the next day, they’re still coming to maturity, I can’t wait to see what they grow! I’ve had a few harvests, reagents and a little gold, but it’s nice to see the plants grow up, it’s so cute to see their little animations. The Boom Shroom is adorable the way it ‘pops’ every few minutes, the top blowing up like an old Loony Tunes cartoon.
Growing them has been really easy, because it’s very clear what they need – water, pollination, pest control, etc… It makes it very casual and even kind of relaxing when there’s no need to stress over what’s wrong with your plants or how to fix it, but the need for things like watering and music help invest me in the plants and the growing process, almost like a pet that can’t really do any tricks…
I’ll probably do a bit more gardening – it was fun to try but I don’t think I’m going to be shooting for master gardener any time soon – not when The Spiral is still in peril!!
PLOX!!
Gardening Part 2 – My first garden!
So I was in Golem Court talking to that cute little mole person Farley. I learned all about the different stages of a plant’s life, saw wilted and dead plants, learned about harvesting, and I tried to sing. I shouldn’t really try to sing…
Finally I plant my very first garden – well, if you consider three plants a garden anyway! I was able to plant a despairagus, a dandilion, and a boom shroom! Let’s see if I can get them to grow! After all, my green thumb is actually orange…
It’s funny how things sneak up on you…
I’ve been playing a bunch of Wizard 101 lately, more than usual, as I’ve REALLY been enjoying Mooshu and we’ve been buried under a ton of snow. I’ve been enjoying my adventures and general questing so much that little details like XP and leveling haven’t been on my radar much. I know the last time I checked my level I was level 39 – I remember because I was all excited to be nearly level 40 and was planning on sending out a message to Twitter when I finally hit the big 4-0…
Imagine my surprise then while playing in the burial grounds tonight, I leveled fighting that awesome flame boss Ember Everburn and get a note from Professor Falmea saying she has a new spell for me. A new spell wasn’t a surprise, as level 40 sounds like a good place to get a new spell, but when I go to train I see Helephant. But, Helephant is level 42? What’s up with that? Sure enough, somehow I had made it all the way to level 42 without realizing it, and was able to train up with both Helephant and Wraith – now I am armed to the teeth!!
That’s what I LOVE about this game and it’s something I’ve tried to impart on others in the past – it’s NOT about leveling or reaching some end goal, that should have very little to do with the overall experience. In Mooshu it’s especially appropriate, as the great Moodha would probably say the same thing – the destination is just one more step on the path of a thousand steps, each one just as important and enjoyable as the last.
Feeling all philosophical now… but Helephant is AWESOME!!
Ditto learns about gardening!
So during my amazing adventures in beautiful Mooshu I found lots of seeds, but I had no idea what to do with them! Well thankfully my old friend Moolinda Wu, the life professor at Ravenwood, helped me to learn all about gardening! This is part 1 of my gardening adventures, where I meet a funny little mole man named Farley who teaches me all about growing magical plants.
Video Bloggy Thingy time!
So I’m back with another video bloggy thingy – sadly not a ton going on lately, at least not that I can talk about yet. The biggest news I guess is the snow – boy do we have lot of snow! That seems to slow everything down, doesn’t it? And it’s so cold and yucky and gets all stuck in my fur. So, any Ditto fans out there in Hawaii or South Florida or Southern California feel like adopting a furry orange Fabricated American? Just kidding!
Din Ho really likes flowers
Well after I assembled all the pieces of the fabled Jade Scepter I figured I’d have another big fight on my hands, but
instead Din Ho sends me to pick flowers. Flowers are nice – better than a big fight, anyway 🙂
Is it really so hard to be polite?
I was in Wizard City, just crusing through the commons, when I came across three young wizards in what amounted to a shouting match, using the most awful language. Not awful because it was vulgar, however, but awful because of the grammatical gymnastics they were performing just to get around Wizard 101’s chat filters. They were all very obviously trying to insult and smack-talk one another (do people still say smack-talk? Monsters use it all the time but sometimes we’re behind the times. I still have ‘Prince’ on cassette…) and maybe to them the put-downs were flying fast and furious, but to an outside observer it was nonsensical and a little sad.
I’ve seen this before, of course, but I’m still genuinely confused by the display, especially in games like wizard 101, which seems to have a lot of chat filtering to keep it family friendly, and which isn’t a super-competitive game like some hardcore first person shooter; sure there’s some PvP, but it just doesn’t seem all that bloodthirsty. I mean, really – it’s kids going to wizard school, with unicorns for pets, not a Black Ops deathmatch…
So I want to ask the question here – is it really so hard to just be polite? Just talk to other players with respect, or at the very least don’t bad mouth others in game (or anywhere for that matter) and keep your negative opinions to yourself. It’s not that hard, honest – in fact in Wizard 101 and a few other games, it’s actually EASIER to be polite than it is to trash talk, which is a nice feature. Jumping through the chat filter hoops to curse out someone in Wiz 101 just makes you look kind of sad and somewhat illiterate…
Anyway – be nice to each other, it makes the world a much nicer place!

Ditto versus Kanaga – Take 2…
After my initial defeat at the hands of Kanaga, I regrouped
and tried again – and thankfully came out victorious! It was still
an intense fight, Kanaga is a formidable opponent – I might fight
him again just for practice!
More Jade Scepter fun – Enter Kanaga!
With all but the final piece of the Jade Scepter acquired, Din Ho sends me to face Kanaga, the toughest minion of the Palgue Oni… The fight is long and, ultimately, unsuccessful – Kanaga is serious business, and I definitely made a few poor choices during the duel. It was a great fight, though!
Ditto Plays Warstorm…
Oh Zynga, I thought I was safe from your cruel clutches. I’m not interested in farming, or running my own cafe, or poker, or the mafia, or any of the other silly things Zynga was trying to get me hooked on, nothing appealed to me at all. Like I said – I was safe…
And then came Warstorm.
You see, I love CCGs, or ‘Collectible Card Games’, and I’ve been into them for… well, let’s say I’ve got some pre-4th edition Magic The Gathering cards rattling around in a drawer somewhere, I’m sure. The card combat is actually one of the things that attracted me to Wizard 101 in the beginning – I love the idea of basing tactics and strategy around something as purely random as the luck of a card draw, figuring out the percentage chance of specific cards coming up at the right time. Will I get the Meteor Strike card I need, or will I get four pixies and a shield I can’t use? Will I draw enough land cards to power my uber combo, or will I get pounded for six turns waiting for that one swamp card to finally come up. You can take your shooter games and your twitch combat and your skill bars, they’re all fun and they have their place, but for me, a carefully constructed deck of spell cards and deck-to-deck combat always makes me a happy orange monster.
Warstorm, for any who don’t know, is a casual, free to play Facebook game created by Zynga, the makers of Farmville and many other popular social games. If you’re familiar with typical card combat type games, such as Magic the Gathering, Yu Gi Oh, Pokemon, or Wizard 101, then you pretty much know the basics. Zynga isn’t really known for doing many ‘groundbreaking’ things, they take old favorites and build new games around them, putting their own subtle spin on them. They do it well, though, and Warstorm is no different.
The concept of the game is very simple – there are five factions – Human, Elf, Orc, Demon, and Undead, and you create decks – or ‘squads’ in this case – with cards of the same faction. Each squad is built around a hero card and will contain your infantry, ‘special forces’ type cards, spells, and artifacts, and will contain only seven cards – this makes strategy crucial and very interesting.
The cards are mostly standard creatures of fantasy or dark fantasy fare, from dragons, ghosts, and vampires to typical soldiers, dwarves, and elven rangers. The cards have a ‘cost’ in turns, a strength number which indicates the amount of damage it does your opponent, and a toughness that indicates how much damage it can take. Many cards also have ‘special abilities’ like block, flying, fire breathing, health drain, etc… – again, nothing that won’t be instantly familiar to anyone who has played Magic or games like it.
Combat includes one to four of your squads versus an equal number of opposing squads. You can choose which squads to send into battle based on your opponents factions and your personal playstyle. Since you only need seven cards, including a leader, to create a new squad, you’ll find you’ll have a number of options to choose from for any fight, even early in the game. Choosing which squads to send in for different situations becomes one of the critical strategies, even as early as level five.
Victory – or defeat – can come one of two ways. The first is the obvious ‘kill or be killed’, as each player gets a ‘morale bar’, the size of which is determined by the number of squads involved in the battle, plus bonuses. Any creature sent in to attack that is not blocked by an opposing creature does damage to your opponent, and vice-versa. The second victory condition is running out of cards, meaning that you do not have any cards to draw, any cards in your hand, and you have no cards in play. If you run out of cards, it’s game over. In the earlier levels in and 1-on-1 or two versus two squad combat, this is usually the way you’ll win – or lose. With only seven cards in a squad, those games go pretty quickly.
Strategies are varied and, for me, tend to be based on the cards I have (obviously) and the size of the fight I’m in. For a single squad versus squad battle, I try to put together a squad of cards with fast casting times and I try to put as many high toughness and blocker cards as I can, because odds are in a 1 on 1 fight it’s going to be the first team to run out of cards that loses – damaging my opponent isn’t as important.
For larger battles, however – the three or four squad battles – I’ve found that you need squads set to specific tasks. I’ll normally have one squad of fast casting times, one squad (usually my dragon deck) of ‘heavy hitters’ – high casting time but serious firepower and special abilities – and then at least one deck focused on indirect damage skills like Zap and Snipe, to take care of any flying or blocking opponents. If it’s a four squad battle I’ll round it out with a solid defensive squad.
The actual battles themselves are very straightforward, though non-interactive. You get a backstory with some flavor text, you choose your squads, and you attack. Cards are drawn randomly and turns taken automatically, with zero input from the player; you just watch as the fight plays out. It’s still exciting, but I do wish there were a few choices you could make at this point, like which of your creatures you can cast spells on or apply bonuses to.
You can speed up or slow down the action, or even replay the fight if you want to pay close attention to tactics and strategy. You can click on any card in play to pause the game and read it’s text, which will also tell you what special abilities it has – a very useful feature, especially early in the game. The fights will usually run from a minute to several, and if you’re into it there’s quite a rush – seeing your cards come out, seeing the activation timers counting down on your cards and your opponents, anticipating the clashes to come… I’ll admit, I get really into it and have, in fact, yelled at my screen when I see an opponent’s awesome card hit the board and tear through my carefully planned strategy. I’ve laughed rather manically – well, as maniacal as a furry orange monster can laugh – while I see my minions burning through my opponents defenses and seeing their morale drop, knowing in a turn or two I’ll have them beat.
Winning battles moves you farther along the quest/storyline you’re on and captures a new part of the map. Areas that are fully under your control produce silver, which you can spend to buy more cards. Sometimes (OK, daily), barbarians can ‘invade’ a part of the map you already hold, and if you don’t repel them, they’ll stop your silver production and just be annoying in general. There is also the standard real-money transaction currency, and in most cases either currency can be used to buy better cards, pre-made squads, or more content/quest packs – again, nothing groundbreaking, standard free to play and social gaming fare.
The social game aspects are not at all subtle – you’ll get a lot of pop ups and dialogs telling you to send cards to your friends, visit the alchemist for stat boosts, buy new booster packs, things like that. If you are playing with others and they’re into it, go ahead and send them gifts – you can send some pretty decent stuff, and this is also the first game I’ve seen where you occasionally have the ability to win or send the real-money currency, not just in-game silver. I was able to buy a good pre-made squad using that, without spending a dime, so that was nice.
The ‘PvP’ aspect of the game is lacking only in that your opponent has no idea that you’re attacking, and has no way of choosing which squads to defend with, so it’s sometimes not a very fair or satisfying experience. It doesn’t appear that anything ‘bad’ happens to you if you get attacked, so it’s not the end of the world, but I’d love a more active PvP element to this. Like ‘Backyard Monsters’, my biggest pet peeve is the fact that I can be attacked and defeated and have no input or say into the attack or my own defense. But as I said – there don’t seem to be any consequences, so I guess overall it doesn’t matter, it’s just more battles to hone your skills.
So that’s it – the game is listed as still in beta, but it seems well polished and it plays great in Chrome or Firefox. I don’t use IE because even monsters have standards. The game is set up so it can easily be a quick 15 minute lunchtime diversion, or you can play for an hour or more and not be bored – again, that’s if you’re into card combat. If you don’t care for the mechanics and gameplay of standard card combat and collectible card games, this is NOT going to be your cup of tea.
I’m level 10 as of yesterday and still going strong, so I’m sure I’ll have more information and tactics posts in the future. Thanks for reading!

The Quest for the Jade Scepter – A Pagoda of Significance…
Still on the path of the fabled Jade Scepter, I am guided to a Pagoda that holds special significance to the Plague Oni. Turns out it is of significance to him because some of his thugs hang out there and sharpen their knives and chat about battle tactics, apparently, so once again I got jumped. This is becoming a habit for me on this quest!
Sadly, I was not quite so successful this time, but it was a daring and exciting battle. I successfully defeated him on the second try, but my camera battery had died, sadly, so I was unable to capture my impressive victory. Trust me when I say it was amazing…
Daring Adventures of Ditto Transcripts
There have been a few requests for something like this, so I have put a new section here on my blog, a tab on the top right for ‘Daring Adventures’ episode transcripts, for people that might have trouble downloading or listening to the audio versions. Each episode also has a link to the MP3 file and lists the episode of Ravenwood Radio it was originally part of.
Let me know of there are any comments or suggestions, thanks!!

Happy Friday – More quest for the Jade Scepter
So as I adventure through Mooshu, questing for pieces of the mythical Jade Scepter, I am asked to search for a piece of the scepter in various houses and huts in the area, as it may be hidden there…
Now, being an experienced adventurer, I was pretty sure all I would find in these quaint little Mooshu huts was danger, disappointment, and bad guys. Sometimes I just hate being right… Each hut was, of course, an ambush, and I was jumped buy fiendish minions of the Plague Oni, villains who would stop at nothing to keep me from completing my quest…
So I blew them all up. What can I say – I’m a Pyromancer! Go Fire!!
A surprise milestone!!
I was doing a little questing in Mooshu, mostly for XP (I want to be level 40 before I take on Plague Oni, I’m pretty close now) and I got the message ‘your backpack is full, your stuff was put in your bank’ yadda yadda… So I shoot over to Wizard City and start selling stuff at the bazaar. Then I head back home and pull stuff out of my bank – wow, backpack is full again, that’s a lot of stuff in my bank. Head back to the bazaar, sell more stuff… After three such trips, I got a pretty major shock…
My gold balance is over 100K now! That means I have enough for the Fire School house!!
So now I have to make lots of plans for buying my fire school house, getting the decorating started, and throwing a huge party! and of course I’ll have to make some videos for all of this, too… I’m so excited!!!
PLOX!!
On the path of the Jade Scepter – Koto at the Dojo….
On my epic path to locate the Jade Scepter and defeat the Plague Oni, I find myself in the Dojo of a villain known only as ‘Koto’ – villains with only one name are always more frightening, like ‘Voldemort’ or ‘Madonna’…
This fight was EPIC, and for all the wrong reasons. My carefully laid plans and strategies, honed to a razor fine point in 39 levels of play (plus listening to the Pyromancer study hall episode of Ravenwood Radio about fifty times), all fell apart in a smoking mess as a variety of fizzles, ill-times shields, and other misfortunes had the fight dragging on for over ten minutes! It was like the terror of the Ice Spiders all over again – gah!! Finally, in the end, I was victorious and won the shaft of the fabled Jade Scepter.
This fight does outline something that I think is important, especially as my wizard gets into the higher levels of the game, and that is the ability to adapt your strategy on the fly as things don’t go your way. There were a couple times in this duel where, had I tried to just stick with my tried and true strategy (blow stuff up, ala-meteor strike), I’m sure I would have failed, but I rolled with the punches, as it were, and made it through to victory!!
Now I need a nap…
Ditto begins his search for the Jade Scepter
When I get to a point in the game that looks like it will be good for video, I usually stop playing until I can get my camera set up and film it for the blog (which is a little bit involved, as I’m sure you can imagine). Sometimes this means I will wait a few days, even a week, between play sessions, and being a furry orange monster I can forget what I was doing…
So today I jumped in game, had my camera all set up, and realized that even though I knew I had to fight Ronin Mutineers and get the handle to something called a Jade Scepter (thanks to my handy-dandy quest tracker), I literally had no idea why…
So I fought, and I won, and I leveled up (yay!!) and I headed over to see Din Ho and got the skinny on what was really going on. Turns out this was just the beginning of an amazing quest that should lead up to the dreaded Plague Oni! So here we go, the first step on the path to find the Jade Scepter and defeat the Plague Oni!!

Ditto’s Blog in review – 2010!!
I have to say I’m really happy with this – these are the numbers that WordPress collected on my blog for 2010, and for my first time out, and as the ONLY Fabricated American blogger out there right now (as far as I know, anyway) I think I did great!
What I’m MOST proud of, though, is the fact that my ‘Safety First’ article was my most read article this year – that’s really great, because more than all the silly videos and game tips and stories, I think that’s my most important post of the year, and everyone really should read it!
Thanks EVERYONE who made my blog such a success in 2010 and I’m looking forward to an even more incredible year in 2011!
The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

The Blog-Health-o-Meter™ reads Wow.
Crunchy numbers
The average container ship can carry about 4,500 containers. This blog was viewed about 22,000 times in 2010. If each view were a shipping container, your blog would have filled about 5 fully loaded ships.
In 2010, there were 186 new posts, not bad for the first year! There were 98 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 40mb. That’s about 2 pictures per week.
The busiest day of the year was July 29th with 554 views. The most popular post that day was Safety First!!.
Where did they come from?
The top referring sites in 2010 were thefriendlynecromancer.blogspot.com, twitter.com, facebook.com, asset-server1.libsyn.com, and my.diaryofawizard.com.
Some visitors came searching, mostly for backyard monsters, backyard monsters defense strategy, ditto wizard, backyard monster, and backyard monsters best layout.

Adventures in Mooshu, and I guess I need to garden…
So I have been having a GREAT time in Mooshu (Though I still have a craving for fried rice and eggrolls) – I’m actually finding I like the story better than Marleybone, it’s more interesting and I feel more drawn into it. In Marleybone I was basically cleaning up street crime and uncovering a huge criminal conspiracy, which was cool, but in Mooshu it’s like I’m helping them reclaim their emperor, helping them to fight off a demon invasion and purify their lands – it jut seems cooler and more noble. Besides, those lamb guys and their big brown eyes are impossible to resist!! So cute!!
One hint I can give is something I started doing in Marleybone, and it’s REALLY helpful here in Mooshu – in each new area you unlock that has teleporters, do a quick run around the area and unlock all the teleporters first thing. This makes travel a lot quicker and in some places a lot safer, since there seems to be a lot more ‘choke points’ in Mooshu, areas where you can get pulled into a duel more easily.
And as far as gardening – well I guess I do have to try it since I keep getting seeds as drops, including crowns seeds like pink dandilions. I’ll try it this week, might even record it and see what happens. Looks cute, in any case – not as cute as the big-eyed lamb people but still cute!
For equipment I’ve done pretty well recently – all in the bazaar, though – nothing of note in drops. Even the ‘big’ boss fights I’ve been in haven’t dropped anything decent, but the bazaar has been fantastic! My best find was Fushiko’s Shroud, giving 3% fire accuracy and 5% fire damage, plus extra health and defense. I have the Wrap of the Leaping Flame, giving another 3% accuracy and 6% damage, and then the War Oni’s footwraps giving 2% accuracy and 4% damage boost. And then my favorite new item – Jade Oni’s amulet of Duplicity, which gives a Hydra card – THAT is a fun spell! My total accuracy boost is 8% and damage is 17%, which is certainly not bad. Maybe not the best, but still not bad.
Happy New Year from Ditto!
Well here it is, 2011 – it seems like 2010 was over before I knew it. Last year was certainly a pretty amazing year for me, starting this little bloggy project, joining Ravenwood Radio, all these great things that have happened, I’m certainly looking forward to a lot more in 2011!
So here is my 2011 New Years Resolutions, plus I did some great predictions for the coming year – enjoy!!
Ditto versus the toughest boss of all…
I was setting up to film myself playing Warstorm, my newest gaming obsession, but my kitten Phillip had different ideas… just something cute and silly for today.
I got fan art!!
I got this emailed to me today – I’m so HAPPY!!!! Thank you thank you thank you! The artist used their real name so I don’t feel it’s proper to use that here, but I’m just so thrilled by this!!
Though I am really happy and excited by getting this wonderful fan art, I want to say to any kids out there – be careful who you email your name and age to, and make sure your parents are helping you, OK? I’m a happy and cheerful Fabricated American and I love all my fans, but not everyone out there is quite so nice, so please just make sure you’re safe online, that’s really important!
Ditto faces the Test of Spirit
The final task in my quest for enlightenment, I get to talk to a big old statue and he says something about sandwiches, or was it yogurt? Maybe eggrolls? See, I wasn’t really paying attention and I was kinda hungry, so I might have missed out a bit on that whole ‘enlightenment’ thing… but I guess I did OK because my buddy Noribu Akitame gave me and Madame Jasmine the thumbs up – though it looks like things aren’t going to be nearly as easy as I had hoped. Looks like this time we’ve got an emperor to save!
DItto versus the Laptop Battery, and the Test of Strength
Still on the path of Mind, Body, and Spirit in Mooshu, I face one of my greatest challenges yet – my laptop battery dies as I’m talking to Noboru Akitame at the Jade Palace. Thankfully I’m able to cast the ‘plug the laptop in’ spell and get back into game with a minimum of fuss.
So far I’m really loving Mooshu – it’s a beautiful world and I LOVE the music – so tranquil and wonderful. I’m going to really enjoy it here!
