Ditto Saves Selena Gomez – Part 2
So Madame Jasmine and I, after drinking the water breathing potion, jump into the river in Triton Avenue and find the cool and mysterious Crab Alley! I have to say, the place looks GREAT, and I love the swimming animations! The enemies are great too, the crabs and ‘vicious fish’ are too cool. After this first taste of underwater action, I’m more excited about Celestia than ever!!!
Ditto saves Selena Gomez – Part 1
I was traveling in Wizard City and heard a call from Professor Balestrom, the storm school professor. It turns out Selena Gomez, an actress on ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ – as well as a great singer – was kidnapped and taken down a sunken part of Wizard City called ‘Crab Alley’… In the first part of the quest I have to collect pearls from Scarlet Screamers to make a cool water breathing potion. It’s really a fun and enjoyable quest series, and the underwater elements are fun and look really good!! I’ll post more of my daring underwater adventures soon.
Detective Ditto versus Mister Incinerator
As part of my new spell quest for Professor Falmea, I had to go to Chelsea Court and find ‘Mister Incinerator’, a crazy creepy storm boss who burns things in his belly… I was feeling confident, until I realized I was fighting a 1000 health and a 2000 health storm boss… This was a very hard fight and I’ll admit, I was unprepared and I fell victim to my own overconfidence. One problem was lack of heals – I think I only had two in my deck, and only the lower end pixie, not the higher cost Satyr.
I did beat him on my THIRD try (I didn’t film it, sadly, I just wanted to get it done…) and got my less than useful Fire Minion – though admittedly the fire minion might have been useful in this particular duel, ironically…
Ditto gets to Chelsea Court!
Detective ditto here! So I finally made it through Hyde Park, and though we did not recover the informant Baxter, we have apparently made great strides in uncovering the whole nefarious scheme! I’ve spoken to Sherlock Bones and I’m heading off to Chelsea Court to further track down these criminals, who are apparently in league with some strange metal men… Lets hope I can find Baxter before it’s too late!
Ditto fights Gearhead – take 2!!
So after our intense first matchup, I return to face Gearhead again. This fight goes much better and thanks to skill, cunning, and more than a dash of luck, I am victorious!!
I have to say, the duels are getting more and more intense, especially these storm bosses. I”m going to have to be on my A game from now on!!
Ditto fights Gearhead – part 1
So I finally made it to the final boss fight in Hyde Park, Gearhead, a storm boss with 1000 health! This fight was pretty intense, and sadly, did not end well for me. This was another one of those great, intense Wizard 101 duels where, thanks to random chance and inopportune fizzles on both sides, I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen until the very last turn. Overall a great fight and I learned a few things…
Ditto’s Video Blog – Sept 14th
So here is my video blog for this week – finally! I’m talking about Wizard 101, of course, plus Lord of the Rings and Clone Wars, which I’m very excited about!! Next up – finishing Hyde Park!!
Finding Baxter – Now What??
So after searching all the safehouses looking for Baxter – and being ambushed by thugs in each and every one – Mrs. Conrail now thinks she’s got another informant who can tell us where Baxter is. The problem is that we apparently have to ‘convince’ him to tell us the location. Why is it that I suddenly see a number of meteor strikes in my immediate future… It’s hard being a detective in Marelybone!!
Wow – Welcome to Wizard 101 Selena Gomez!!
so I wake up this morning and find out the big news in Wizard 101 is that Selena Gomez, from the very fun show ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, is now going to be having a role in Wizard 101! I actually like ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ because it’s a very cute show and in past episodes I believe they have employed Fabricated American actors, so I salute that!! Anyway, this is very fun and exciting news and of course will mean lots more new student wizards in Wizard 101!!
Of course along with the big announcement we got to see NEW STUFF!! Yes, in the video introducing Selena we get to see a shark mount in action, some CRAZY new spells, like a genie and a big Egyptian Horus-looking monster spell, as well a Selena dancing with what looked like moles? Not sure about that one, but I am one very excited furry orange monster this morning!!!
And if you haven’t seen it here is the video from KingsIsle’s YouTube channel with the big announcement and new in-game footage!!
Finding Baxter Part 3
Yes, Ditto has found yet another ‘Safe House’ where Baxter might be hiding – of course he’s not there and your daring furry orange monster is once again jumped by vicious thugs! These safe houses really aren’t very safe… You know, there sure are a lot of thugs and criminals lurking in the shadows of Marleybone.
Finding Baxter – part 2
So I located the second safehouse in Marleybone looking for the elusive Baxter. Of course as I expected, I didn’t find Baxter, I found more angry thugs. This was actually a much more exciting fight than I expected and I was pretty happy to get out of it alive!!
Happy Birthday Wizard 101!
So Wizard 101 – as well as my friend Christina Icedreamer – had a birthday, and they gave out these fun transformations as presents! I jumped into game and turned into a Ninja Pig!! So much fun!
Sunken City Survivor!
So I had a bit of time to jump in the spiral today, but I didn’t have time to set up and film my adventures, so I didn’t want to do the next things in Marleybone I had scheduled. Looking at my quests list I saw that I still had Sunken City to attempt. I didn’t see anyone from my immediate friends list on, but I figured I’d do the crazy thing and try to solo it – worst case scenario, I can’t do it, I try again later with help.
Well what an intense dungeon! Right off the bat I’m dueling three enemies, all elites. I’m able to buff up a meteor strike and take all three out, and I realize that with proper planning and strategy I can probably solo the whole thing. Without meteor strike or some other ‘hit all enemies’ spell there was no way I could have done it, but with meteor strike and buffs I figured it was possible.
My strategy for getting Marla through the initial gates was always the same – either for street fights or tower fights I would cast two fire blades and, if the boss was big enough, a WyldFyre. Follow with a meteor strike and you’re on the the next round – after gobbling up red wisps, of course.
Norton’s tower was the first serious challenge, as there were multiple levels of fights that got harder and harder, and Norton had 800 health! I was able to do it though, and headed to Grubb’s tower for the final showdown!
I will say that if Grubb’s tower was a multi-level like Norton’s, I would have quit, mostly because I didn’t have a ton of time left to play, but also because I had zero potion bottles left full. Thankfully, Grubb was right there, all glaring with his 1000 health points, and of course to make it just THAT much harder, his minions were FIRE, so they were able to resist all of my pyromancer’s charms. I tossed some prisms in my deck to try and handle them but it turns out the way things played out they weren’t needed – or at least I never saw them come up…
The ultimate epicness came at the end of the Grubb fight and is something that only the randomness of Wiz101 could have provided. I was last in the turn order, always a big disadvantage, especially against three opponents. I had hit all enemies with one meteor strike that took them all down to below 300 health, and had shielded and cast pixie to get my health back up and prepare for another meteor strike. They got in a VERY good round that had me down to 33 health, but I had enough pips for another meteor strike (and didn’t have a pixie handy), so knowing that would end the game I went for it. Fizzle! I figured that was it and had already accepted defeat when…
Next turn Grubb casts death trap on me, then the two scarecrow minions both fizzle!! My next attempt at meteor strike is a success and I take all three out! I finished Sunken City solo with only 33 health left – needless to say I was really happy and didn’t even care that Professor Snape Drake only gave Marla an A minus….
I didn’t get to tape any of this, sadly, but I now proudly wear my ‘Sunken City Survivor’ badge…
The Daring Adventures of Ditto – Episode 9!
Here it is, Episode 9 of the Daring Adventures of Ditto, as originally heard on Ravenwood Radio episode 23! Follow Ditto and Madame Jasmine into Jolly Old Marelybone and NOT get into daring battles and adventures!! so very exciting – you don’t want to miss this one!!
Finding Baxter Part 1
After my ambush I was sent to the first of several safe houses to find the elusive informant Baxter. Of course as I expected, ‘safe house’ #1 wasn’t particularly safe. Enter thrilling duel and Ditto’s heroic win!
Ambushed in Hyde Park!
So I was exploring around Hyde Park and found the very nice Mrs. Conrail, who works with the hilariously named Sherlock Bones. She had me looking for an informant named Baxter, which sounded about as exciting as looking for potted plants, but then as I was looking for him I was actually ambushed!! It looks like someone didn’t want me sticking my nose in their business – which is funny, since I don’t actually have a nose!
Ditto and the Silver Chest
So I was exploring in Marleybone and came across a silver chest – now, I know what a wooden chest is, but I wasn’t sure what a silver chest was. It turns out you need to unlock them by playing a clever little game called ‘shock a lock’ – it was very exciting! I only got 42 gold, but it was really fun and exciting, I want to play more!
Ditto begins his adventures in Marleybone
So now that I’ve made it to jolly old Marleybone, what adventures await me? Maybe an airship ride, or thrilling battles, or… searching for flowers? Well, it will certainly be an amazing adventure in any case!
The Furry Orange Monster’s guide to Pyromancy…
So it’s me, Ditto, and now that I am level 28 and have made it to Marleybone and I think I’m doing a pretty good job, so I wanted to share some of my thoughts and strategies relating to the Fire School, also known as Pyromancy.
I will start off by telling you that if you want a REAL guide to fire school, try something like this Wizard101 Central guide – though I must admit I’m having a hard time finding other guides to playing Pyromancers, so I’ll work at making this a good one. Also, you can get a good list of fire spells at the Wizard 101 Wiki site, among other places…
Pyromancer Basics:
So to start off with, Pyromancers are all about damage. According to many official guides they are all about damage over time, but that really hasn’t been my experience. In fact, at level 28 I have no damage over time spells with me unless I’m fighting ice creatures, which are a special case that I’ll discuss later.
Pyromancer spells do lots of damage for lower pips compared to most other schools (Storm is a notable exception), but they have a drawback – accuracy. Standard damage spell accuracy of fire spells is 75% base, which means you’ve got a 1 in 4 chance of a fizzle, which is more like a 3 in 4 chance to fizzle if this is the spell you need to stay alive in a duel. Seems like that anyway.
Your early game spells consist of some good single shot spells – namely Firecat at level 1 and the much more impressive Sunbird at level 10. For damage over time you’ve got your fire elf at level 2, link (which also gives you a small heal over time) at level 12, and finally Heck Hound at level 18. None of these are particularly impressive, to be honest, and with the exception of Heck Hound I never got much use out of them. Heck Hound does have one impressive feature, however – it boosts damage based on how many pips you put into it, so you get 120 damage PER PIP over a 3 round period.
A good strategy I used with Heck Hound for a short time was this – If you’ve got a big fight that’s going to last a while (like a boss fight), I would cast 0 pip shields and fire blades until round 5 or 6 at least, take minimal damage, and then unleash a Heck Hound. 6 pips = 720 damage over 3 rounds, which is NOT bad… of course it uses 100% of your pips when you cast it, so you’re pretty weak after you cast it – make sure you pay attention there… if you’re low on health try to go for a heal BEFORE you cast Heck Hound.
Standard Tactics
So I think the most simple and easy to use tactics for fire are buff, buff, shoot. You cast your buffs (Fire Trap, Fire Blade, etc…) in the first two to three turns, then unleash your biggest, baddest damage spell. I haven’t come across many foes that could withstand that kind of damage in the early game. If you’ve got an appropriate shield and think the fight might go on for a while, then by all means shield up, but my strategy has always been focused on a quick fight – the less turns it lasts, the less damage I take. If you’re good with numbers you can figure out pretty easily what combination of buffs and damage spells are needed to take the enemy out quickly, so don’t worry about throwing every damage buff in your deck out there for a regular street fight – if you can take the evil snowmen out with a fire blade and a meteor strike then that’s all you need, fights over turn 3 or 4, move on to the next.
The Big Guns
I think the game changed completely for me at level 22 – that’s when I got Meteor Strike. Meteor Strike is a direct damage spell that hits ALL enemies in the dueling circle, so that if you’ve got it stacked right, you can take out up to 4 enemies in one shot. And it’s only 4 pips, so you can get it out early in a fight and end things quick – this is awesome for those ‘Go kill 8 Spiders’ type quests, you can make quick work of your enemies.
Of course I recently got another ‘big gun’ – I’m not sure what I think of it yet, though it did win me a boss fight in Krokotopia. This spell is ‘Immolate’ – it does 600 base damage, which is awesome, but it has the teensy drawback of also dealing 250 damage to YOU. AND if you’ve buffed the damage, that % buff applies not only to the 600 damage for your enemy, but also the 250 done to you. Yes – I’ve done over 300 damage to MYSELF with this spell – though you should have seen the other guy!
I DID find that you can go to the fairegrounds in Wizard City, where all the mini-games are, you can learn fire shield from Sabrina Greenstar. If you put fire shield on yourself before casting immolate you’ll do much less damage to yourself, while still doing maximum damage to your opponent. It seems a bit more advanced than other tactics, but so far it’s doing some pretty significant damage. You just really need to pay attention to your health before attempting it!
Buffing for Success
Once I had Meteor Strike things certainly went much quicker for me, but I found that at a base damage of only 305-345, it just didn’t have enough ‘oomph’ for my later Krokotpian adventures. Thankfully, a Pyromacers’ arsenal is augmented by a number of handy damage buff spells. In pure fire school buffs you get a fire blade (+35% damage, get at enrollment I think), a fire trap (+25% damage, get it from Professor Falmea at level 18) and WyldFire (+25% to ALL fire spells for the duration of the battle). In addition to these, in Krokotopia I was able to train at the Balance Tree on Krokosphynx Island and learned an elemental blade and an elemental trap, which give additional boosts to fire spells (as well as ice and storm), but cost one pip to cast. In this way, with the right deck and the right cards coming up, you can add a pretty significant damage boost to your meteor strike (or make Immolate do a massive amount of damage – be careful though!!) and take out most bosses; at least most that I’ve encountered so far, anyway.
Complimentary Spells
The ‘what’s the best secondary school’ discussion is one that has gone of for so long that I don’t really feel like I have anything significant to add – but that won’t stop me from talking about it! I’ve done a lot of research on this and used a lot of treasure cards and here is what I’ve found: The best Pyromancer secondary school depends heavily on your playstyle. If you’re a more conservative player, then Life gives you good heals and a nice absorb shield, while ice has the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of defense, the tower shield. If you’re a more aggressive player interested in maximizing damage, then death school has the amazing Feint (+70% damage!!) and it has vampiric damage spells that grant you health equal to half the damage you do. The death school damage isn’t nearly as high as fire school, but being able to do damage AND heal simultaneously is nothing to sneeze at, especially when that base damage is boosted by 70% or more!
Special Situations
So there are some situations I’ve come across where the standard tactics and spells just didn’t work. The first of these was the dreaded Ice Spiders battle, but applies to any time you are fighting against Ice opponents. Not only do they have tower shields, but they ALSO have fire shields, and they know how to use them. I’ve been in a fight where my opponents cast a shield about every other turn, which makes for a very long, drawn out fight.
To combat this I got a great tip from a reader and ended up putting some fire elf cards back in my ‘fighting against ice creatures’ deck. One pip to cast and three shield-free turns to blast away at your opponent makes these fights much shorter, but you don’t really have time for building up for that ‘one big hit’ that I normally employ before the elf ends it run and the shields start to go back up. I just hit them with smaller damage spells more often and get through it pretty quickly – even fire cats can take out a boss if you’re tossing enough of them.
Another special situation is fighting against another fire school opponent. The reason for this, for anyone who doesn’t know, is that fire school gets a pretty healthy resist to other fire damage (probably why I don’t singe my fur all the time) and therefore any fire spells you cast at your fire opponent will do less damage – sometimes significantly less damage – than it’s base damage values. Thankfully, in the well trained Pyromancer’s arsenal there is another valuable weapon – the fire prism!
Fire Prism is a simple little spell that you get at level 7. It does one thing, but it does it very well – it converts fire damage to ice damage. This means that when you cast your fire spell, once it gets to your opponent is’ actually doing ICE damage! Woohoo!! Since ice damage gets a healthy BOOST against fire creatures, you’ll do even more damage than your base fire damage numbers.
A special note on this – since buffs/boosts are applied in the reverse order they were cast (first in last out) you should cast the prism BEFORE you cast your fire traps. If you do that, you’ll boost the fire damage, THEN convert all that boosted damage to ice. If you prism first, the fire trap won’t get tripped because the damage type at that time is actually ice.
In Closing
Well this article took on a life of it’s own, but I think it’s got some good info. Certainly not the be-all end-all of Pyromancer guides, but my own spin on the class, with my own opinions. All these things have worked for me in some way, and I think it’s a good overview of the class as I have experienced it, but these are all my observations – other pyromnacers will certainly have their own, and I’m sure there are a few Grandmaster pyros out there who could teach me a lot. But in the end, this is all about having fun, and I don’t think that how you play is nearly as important as making sure you’re having FUN while you’re playing!! So go out there any have a good time!!!
See you in the Spiral!
PLOX!!
Ditto’s weekly video blog
So here is my video blog this week – I talk about twitter – 115 followers as of this morning!! And my adoration of Felicia Day, plus a few other casual games I have been playing lately…
The Daring Adventures of Ditto – Episode 8
Here it is, The Daring Adventures of Ditto, Episode 8, featuring Ditto, his trusty companion Madame Jasmine, and of course, Miss Narrator… This segment originally aired on Ravenwood Radio Episode 22, available for download now… And speaking of Ravenwood Radio, if you like my Daring Adventures and Ravenwood Radio, why don’t you go over to iTunes and give Ravenwood Radio a great review!
Ditto gets to Marleybone!!
I finally defeated Krokopatra and got the Spiral Key to Marleybone! I haven’t explored much yet, but it’s going to be really great, I can tell! It’s kind of dirty though, isn’t it? I guess then they say they need wizards to ‘clean up the town’ they mean with a broom, not a wand…
Words can still hurt, even if you’re just typing them…
So last night’s Ravenwood Radio was a great show as always, and thanks again to Leesha and Steve for hosting such a wonderful webcast! Miss Narrator and I truly enjoy being a part of it, and it’s great to know through all the feedback I get that many other people enjoy our segment too.
So last night, as with pretty much every episode, Miss Narrator and I were listening in and, of course, participating in the chat room, because that’s one of my favorite parts of the Ravenwood Radio experience – that great chat room community. It’s always well moderated of course, and thanks to the excellent work of IcyWiz and the other mods it’s a fun and friendly place to hang out during the live webcast.
Anyway – so last night ‘The Daring Adventures of Ditto’ segment came on and many people cheered (thank you, we love that!), but there were a few who said some pretty negative things, mostly directed at Miss Narrator. I’m not going to say who or what was said, that’s not the point of this. The point is that she was right there, in the chat room, listening along and having a good time participating as these things were said about her. Of course the rest of the chat room immediately jumped to her defense, which she really and truly appreciated, but the initial attacks still stung.
I do a LOT of social media (being the #1 Fabricated American gaming blogger on the web, of course…) and I see this all the time on Facebook and other web forums and communities. People think they can type whatever they want about whoever they want and there’s no consequence, because ‘it’s just Facebook, everybody does it’, and then when there is a backlash there’s the eternal excuse ‘I was only kidding’. But unfortunately, by that point the damage has already been done. ‘Only kidding’ doesn’t really fix it.
So what’s my point? Well, it’s simple, really – if you’re talking to someone, or ABOUT someone, on the internet, always assume other people are going to see it. Always think about what the words really mean – not YOUR interpretation but what the words actually mean to other people reading them. Assume people don’t have the same background or frame of reference that you do, so they aren’t going to understand that you’re ‘only kidding’. Assume any conversation you have online is no different from a conversation you have in the middle of a room full of people who can all hear you. Assume that if you’re saying something bad about someone else, that they WILL find out about it. Think about how YOU would feel if someone said the same thing about you, or your friends, or your mom, or your wife.
‘But they started it!’ – See, I already knew what you were going to say. One benefit of the internet is that if someone ‘starts something’ on Facebook or a forum it’s very easy to walk away. Delete the comment, block the user, or just turn off the computer and step away. We don’t need to make things worse by blasting back and saying something in the heat of the moment that we’ll regret later.
So to close – just because you’re typing something on a computer using the name ‘Elmer Fancypants’ instead of your real name, don’t think that those words are any less ‘real’ than if you were saying them to the person sitting across the dining room table from you. Because actually, they are MORE real – because a lot more people can see them, and it’s very, very hard to take them back once they’re out there.
Thanks for listening…. Be good to one another, and I’ll See you in The Spiral!

Ditto Monster
Ditto defeats Krokopatra!!
Here it is – my second (and ultimately successful) battle against the evil Krokopatra! After my less than stellar performance in round 1, this time things go much better and I handily defeat her. This is my last big battle of Krokotopia, leading to the spiral key to Marleybone!
